What do I need to apply?

To gain entry to this Masters degree course you’ll need one of the following:

  • A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree.
  • An academic or professional qualification approved by senate (or a committee acting on its behalf). As equivalent in breadth and depth to a UK honours degree.

As a distance learner, you’ll also need a suitable computer with internet connection, together with sufficient IT competence to make effective use of word processing, internet and email.

If English is not your first language, you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Applicants seeking admission with credit (either APCL or APEL) are referred to the APEL advisor for the Faculty of Health Social Care and Education.

The published entry requirements are only a guide and decisions will be based on an overall suitability for the course as well as whether the minimum entry requirements have been met. We welcome students from a wide variety of backgrounds so working in a health or mental health care sector is not essential.

On successful completion of the course you will be expected to be able to:

  • Synthesise knowledge and understanding related to mental health care needs, including cultural and social.
  • Critically evaluate mental health care for service users with complex needs focusing on individualised care and recovery.
  • Compare and contrast methods of intervention which promote recovery from the service-users perspective and their carers/families.
  • Critically evaluate contemporary mental health care with a focus on an international perspective.
  • Present a comprehensive analysis of inter-professional working in mental health care, with a focus on collaborative practice and change management.
  • Critically evaluate the application of knowledge, reasoning skills, reflection, and research to mental health care within an ethical and legal framework.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of alternative ontological, epistemological and methodological perspectives.
  • Identify and critically evaluate relevant concepts, models and principals that’s inform and illuminate the area of inquiry.
  • Demonstrate originality of problem solving strategies in mental health care, taking into consideration international/national drivers, contemporary issues and collaboration.
  • Critically debate how socio-cultural and environmental factors can affect the quality of care for service users and how, through working collaboratively, individual care needs can be met.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive awareness of legal, ethical, moral issues in relation to mental health care, including social inclusion.
  • Analyse a range of innovative initiatives which promote recovery from complex mental health issues related to specialist services.
  • Critically evaluate research findings and the importance of these in informing and developing mental health care.
  • Negotiate a summative, integrative topic or investigation appropriate to mental health care which demonstrates a creative flexible approach.
  • Demonstrate competence in the management of a research or work-based project in a way that is consistent with mental health care.
