Learn how innovative medical devices are designed, produced and regulated

Major advances in technology are driving innovation in healthcare. On this course, you will explore the global landscape of medical device trends by looking at the past, present, and future of medical technology development.

You will be introduced to the key factors driving the development of innovative medical equipment, and learn how medical devices are classified. You will also explore medical device regulation as you follow the product development process of a new medical device, from identifying the clinical need to launching the final product.

When bringing a new medical device to the marketplace, developers must consider a wide range of variables. These include patients and clinical needs, compatibility with existing technology, economic considerations and regulatory approval. You will understand some of the challenges and commercial opportunities involved in the development of medical devices.   • Week 1

    An introduction to MedTech

    • Welcome

      In the first week of the course, you will explore what drives innovation in healthcare. You will also be introduced to the different classifications of medical devices, and to the regulations which they must adhere to.

    • Understanding the past, the current context and future of healthcare challenges

      In this activity, you will learn about the different types of medical device, and you will think about the past, present and future of MedTech.

    • Challenges for MedTech to overcome

      In this activity, you will examine some of the challenges which any new MedTech device needs to overcome in order to be successful.

    • How do we know MedTech is safe to use?

      In this activity, you will learn how regulators and the MedTech industry work together to guarantee patient safety.

    • Revision

      This revision activity provides further opportunity to explore the topics covered this week.

    • Summary

      To close this week of the course, you have the opportunity to reflect on the week and explore the Glossary

  • Week 2

    How do MedTech products get developed and launched?

    • About Week 2

      This week you will explore the process of designing and developing a new MedTech device, from identifying a clinical need to launching a finished product.

    • Establishing a need

      In this activity you will learn how to identify a clinical need for a new MedTech product, and about the key stakeholders involved in this process.

    • Designing with regard to regulations

      In this activity you will look at the design stage of developing a new MedTech product, including the influence of standards and regulations, and the importance of trials and testing.

    • Understanding the MedTech market

      In this activity you will think about the MedTech market, and the differences between large and small companies in this sector.

    • Revision

      This revision activity provides further opportunity to explore the topics covered this week.

    • Summary

      This section provides a summary of key points from the course to enable you to review the topics covered in the course as well as the opportunity for you to test your understanding with a quiz.
